Helicopter Assisted Hiking and Glacier Exploration

The South Nahanni River’s best kept secret is the broad mountain landscape found west of Rabbitkettle Lake. Long considered Canada’s most celebrated wilderness river the Nahanni is home to an equally spectacular alpine topography aptly named the Ragged Range. Rising thousands of feet above the river valley the region is encircled by the Flat River to the south, the Little Nahanni to the north and the valley of the South Nahanni on the east. The most prominent feature at the height of this space is the Britnell Icefield, as large as any of the ice-sheets found in the Rockies. This alpine playground is filled with towering peaks, alpine glaciers, rolling meadows and clear mountain tarns. Nahanni Wild’s exploration of the Ragged Range in 2015 and 2016 has lead to the creation of two new alpine adventure programs with helicopter access. Available to groups of four or more guests starting June 2018 Nahanni Wild is offering both a Basecamp Experience and an Alpine Trekking Experience.

For anyone with a passion for the alpine the Ragged Ragne offers an incredible experience. A short helicopter flight provides swift access to our comfortable and well stocked base camp positioned on a small unnamed lake at the foot of Mount Sydney Dobson (4th highest peak in the NWT at 8629’/2630m).

The highlight of the trek will be exploring the rocky moraines recently released from the icy grip of the glacier and then hiking over the massive Brtinell icefiled. Before going far on the ice our mountain guide will introduce everyone to walking with crampons, glacier travel and general safety when exploring this dynamic terrain.
