In June 2007 the Nahanni RiverÕs first river outfitting company moved their outfitting base from Fort Simpson to Lindberg Landing. The move cut our trip participants fuel consumption in half. The information we have collected from the operations managers of the available commercial airlines tells us that our Nahanni River trip participantÕs consumption is now below 150 liters per person down from 300 liters. In addition for people flying North through Edmonton the single flight to Fort Nelson and our shuttle to Lindberg Landing will save you over $500 compared to the two flights it takes to travel via Yellowknife to Fort Simpson.
The ill effects of air pollution on the population and our environment have long been known. Within the last year heads of state from Canada, Great Britain and the United States have each addressed their nations with urgent plans to reduce their creation of greenhouse gases and global warming. Here in Canada our federal government has pledge over 250M for research and the creation of cleaner energy sources. The adventure travel industry must share this goal. Outfitters must review their operational plans and find ways to reduce their ecological footprint. Rather than simply claim a Ôno trace camping ethicÕ, operators need consider the aircraft and ground transportation necessary for trip participants to arrive at the starting point for their Òtrip of a lifetimeÓ. In 2007 Nahanni Wilderness Adventures moved its base closer to Nahanni National Park- Reserve. By following our new operational plan via Fort Nelson our trip participants consumed an average of 147 liters of jet and vehicle fuel per person compared with the 300 liters person we were burning when our trips started in Fort Simpson. Further details can be found in the tables below.
The other good news is that you will save over $500 per person in travel costs.
An October 1/07 check of websites found that First Air flights from Edmonton to Yellowknife and Fort Simpson are available for $1390 taxes included. Central Mountain AirÕs flight from Edmonton to Fort Nelson was listed at $580 taxes included. If you are coming through Calgary you will save even more with Central Mountain Air. This additional leg with First Air is $362 and only $154 with Central Mountain Air. Help save the environment and save your money. When you do the math the Edmonton connection into Fort Nelson will save you over $800 per person in commercial flights. If you need our shuttle to the base you are still saving over $500 and reducing your ecological foot print by half.
